Does TRICARE West Cover ABA Therapy?
Yes. TRICARE West covers ABA therapy for autism through TRICARE's Autism Care Demonstration, with no age limit or yearly cap, and TriWest, which runs TRICARE West, must approve each service first. How TRICARE West covers ABA therapy
TRICARE pays for ABA through a special program called the Autism Care Demonstration (ACD).
- Who qualifies: Family members of active duty service members, retirees, and certain National Guard and Reserve members can get ABA once they have a TRICARE plan and an autism diagnosis.
- No caps: TRICARE puts no yearly or lifetime cap on ABA and sets no age or time limits.
- How long it runs: The ACD started on July 25, 2014, and is currently authorized through December 31, 2028.
- Who runs it here: TriWest Healthcare Alliance has managed the TRICARE West Region since January 1, 2025, and it approves ABA for TRICARE West families.
- Which states: The West Region covers 26 states, including Texas, Colorado, Hawaii, Nebraska, and Nevada, while North Carolina and Michigan are in the East Region.

1. A TRICARE health plan
Your child needs to be enrolled in a TRICARE plan, such as TRICARE Prime or TRICARE Select. The ABA rules match on every plan, and only costs differ.
2. An autism diagnosis from an approved provider
Your child's pediatrician, family doctor, or a specialist can diagnose autism, but only a specialist can make a first diagnosis at age 8 or older. A diagnosis more than two years old needs an update.
3. A standard test and a DSM-5 checklist
The diagnosing provider adds results from an approved test, such as the ADOS-2 (a play-based autism assessment). They also fill out a DSM-5 checklist that shows how much support your child needs, which your BCBA can't do.
4. A referral to TriWest
The diagnosing provider sends TriWest your child's ABA referral. It lasts two years, and a new referral with an updated checklist is due before it runs out.
5. EFMP and ECHO for active duty families
Active duty sponsors enroll in their branch's Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP). Your child also registers in the Extended Care Health Option (ECHO), which adds services for active duty families, but retiree families skip both steps.
How prior authorization works with TRICARE West
This step means getting TriWest's approval before ABA starts. TRICARE calls it pre-authorization, and each ABA service needs it, even if your child has other insurance.
- First, an assessment: Once your child is enrolled in the ACD, TriWest approves an assessment and assigns an ABA provider who can start it within 28 days.
- Rating scales: Before therapy starts, you and your child's providers fill out outcome measures (rating scales on skills, behavior, and parent stress), then repeat them every six or 12 months.
- Then, the treatment plan: Your BCBA sends TriWest the treatment plan, and TriWest says it reviews a complete request within five business days.
- Six-month approvals: Each approval lasts six months, and your BCBA asks for reauthorization (a renewed approval) 30 to 60 days before it ends.
- A care coordinator: TriWest assigns an autism services navigator, who helps you finish a care plan within 90 days and update it every six months so ABA can continue.

What TRICARE West covers for ABA therapy
Your BCBA requests each service below by its billing code (CPT code).
- Assessments (97151): The BCBA's first assessment, a new one every six months, and some of the rating scales.
- One-to-one therapy (97153): A behavior technician or your BCBA works with your child, for up to 8 hours a day and 40 hours a week.
- BCBA program updates (97155): Your BCBA adjusts your child's program in person at least once a month.
- Parent training (97156, 97157): Coaching for parents and caregivers, with at least six sessions every six months and the first within 30 days of each approval.
- Group sessions (97158): Small-group therapy for up to eight people, led by your BCBA or an assistant behavior analyst.
Your BCBA suggests weekly ABA hours based on your child's needs, and TriWest approves them in 15-minute units. Goals for school, daily living, or job skills aren't covered.
What families pay with TRICARE West
ABA costs you the same as a specialty care visit under your TRICARE plan. All ABA on the same day counts as one copayment.
- Families who owed nothing: 75.7% of families with TRICARE West at Alpaca Health partner clinics owed nothing once claims were processed from August 2024 to August 2026.
- Active duty families in TRICARE Prime: A network specialty care visit costs $0, so covered ABA from a network provider costs nothing.
- TRICARE Select and retiree plans: You pay your plan's specialty care copayment with a network provider, or a share of the cost with a non-network one, after any deductible (the amount you pay before TRICARE starts sharing costs).
- A yearly limit: What you pay for ABA counts toward your plan's catastrophic cap, the most your family pays for covered care in a calendar year.
- Other insurance pays first: If your child has other health insurance besides Medicaid, it pays before TRICARE, and TriWest still has to approve ABA.

Yes. TRICARE's basic benefit pays for the evaluation that diagnoses autism, which the ABA program requires. Your child's primary care provider can make the diagnosis or refer you to a specialist for more testing. If your child doesn't have a diagnosis yet, Alpaca Health offers an autism evaluation and first checks that TRICARE will accept its diagnosis for ABA.
Is there an age limit for ABA therapy with TRICARE?
No, TRICARE sets no age or time limit, so teens and adults can keep getting ABA while they need it to treat their autism. Adults who are too old for their pediatric provider need a clinical psychologist for the diagnosis and referral. At any age, goals must target autism's core areas, such as communication and social skills.
Can I choose my own ABA provider with TRICARE West?
Yes, you can ask for any TRICARE-authorized ABA provider, such as a BCBA who works with Alpaca Health and accepts TRICARE West. TriWest assigns a provider who can start within 28 days, but it can't promise that timing if you pick your own. Learn how to choose an ABA provider before you ask.
What happens to my child's ABA therapy if we PCS?
Your autism services navigator helps keep therapy on track during a PCS (a permanent change of station move). If you move to the other TRICARE region, you'll have two navigators for at least a month before and after. They pass along your child's records, and the referral stays valid wherever you live. Families moving to an East Region state like North Carolina can read about TRICARE East.
Does TRICARE cover ABA therapy at school?
Sometimes, but a behavior technician working at school isn't covered. Your child's BCBA can be approved for short-term ABA at school. Your child needs a current IEP (special education plan), and the ABA goals can't repeat it. TRICARE also covers in-home ABA sessions and clinic visits, and TriWest can approve some daycare and community sessions.
